Headaches and eye pain

Increased frequency of headaches may be related to the health of your eyes.

Headaches and your eyes

Some visual conditions can strain the muscles in your eyes and cause headaches. For example, astigmatism, hyperopia and presbyopia can cause distorted or blurred vision of objects, ultimately putting extra strain on your vision by putting more pressure on your eyes. The accumulation of pressure inside the eye causes, in prolonged cases of these symptoms, the appearance of glaucoma.

Migraines and sight

The pain you feel in your eyes can be, in some cases, signs that a headache is on the way.

Migraine is a type of headache that can be very serious. When it is preceded by visual warnings - such as bright spots, flashing, wavy lines or temporary blindness - it is referred to as a 'migraine with aura'. This type of migraine can last for hours or days. Not all migraines are associated with these visual signs ("migraine without aura"). In addition, some people receive visual cues without the headache, which is known as a silent migraine, or a "migraine aura without headache".

Treating headaches

Many eye conditions that lead to headaches can be treated with glasses and detected during a visual examination.

More rest time is advised for migraine sufferers. Most warnings, like tired eyes that come before migraines, are harmless and tend to disappear within a short time. But in case the migraine leads to unusual symptoms, you should have a visual examination to check that there is nothing that could harm your vision.
